O2 slashes £100 from price of iPhone amid talk of slow sales

Mobile phone company O2 will today cut the price of Apple's 8GB iPhone by £100. The move follows a recent slowdown in sales of the iPhone amid speculation that Apple plans to launch a better version of the music playing phone during the summer. The existing iPhone only has a 2G mobile internet connection, meaning that internet download times are comparatively slow, with users having to resort to wifi connections to download music tracks. However, the new iPhone is predicted to be upgraded to 3G, which is considerably faster.

The iPhone was launched in the UK in September last year and has resulted in a huge uplift in people taking out tariffs with O2 (reported in 'In the News' on 18 January 2008).
