The Competition Commission (CC) released its findings today into a 2 year investigation into the supermarket sector. The CC aim to increase competition within a local area by recommending changes to the planning system. This could see more supermarkets built within a local area. The report suggests that consumers are receiving a good deal from the supermarkets (first reported 'In the News' on 31 October 2007). However this contrasts consumer watchdogs concerns over continued supermarket expansion. For example Tesco has come under fire by many local communities for the negative effect supermarket expansion has on local shops and the community. Seaton in Devon is the most recent example of this (reported 'In the News' 26 March 2008).
